My Natural Hair Products- Old VS New

Healthy hair just like healthy skin starts from the inside but one cannot underestimate the importance of topical products. It’s necessary to have a healthy diet but you still have to support your diet with skin/hair products. When picking out your hair products, you have the option of going for store bought products, homemade products or both. Thankfully, I have had the experience of using both at different points in my hair journey so in this post, I’ll be sharing my experience using both and helping you pick which is best for you.

I was on a healthy/cheap hair journey from January 2017 to July 2018 and during this period, I was basically using all natural homemade products to care for my hair. My regimen comprised of the following:

  • Washing my hair weekly with my homemade black soap shampoo.
  • Moisturising my hair with just water and sealing with raw sheabutter.
  • Doing protein treatment every three to four months with just eggs.
  • Trimming my hair every four to five months.
  • Massaging my scalp daily with sheabutter.

Just last month, I decided to try out some store bought hair products namely a deep conditioner and a leave in conditioner just to see if I would notice any changes in my hair and I must confess that I’m quite impressed with my results. I’ve been using these products for almost one month now and I’m in love already especially with the deep conditioner. I bought the Aussie Moist 3 Minutes Deep Conditioner and the Cantu Sheabutter Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream. My hair routine hasn’t changed much, the only difference is that I now deep condition my hair weekly after washing and alternate between moisturising with water/sheabutter and water/leave in conditioner. I’ve noticed that both the cheap hair products and store bought hair products have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of My Exclusive Sheabutter Regimen

With this regimen, I noticed that I spent less money on my hair which was a bonus because I had more money to spend on other important things. I also didn’t have to worry about my products having harmful chemicals in them because they were purely organic. In addition to that, my products didn’t have any strong smell that I could be allergic to and I got more curl definition with this than I did with my new hair products. This regimen helped me get healthy hair without posing any threat to my health or environment.

Disadvantages of My Exclusive Sheabutter Regimen

With this regimen, I had to be extra careful with my hair which translated into more time spent on detangling and styling it. I also had to moisturise my hair more often because it got dry a lot faster. In addition to that, this regimen made my hair less bouncy, more stiff and more oily/greasy without smelling perfume pleasant.

Advantages of My Deep/Leave in Conditioner Regimen

This regimen makes my hair bouncy and softer to touch. It also makes detangling and styling a lot faster which translates into less time spent on my hair and less amount of hair loss. In addition to the short styling time, the products leave my hair smelling nice for days. It also doesn’t leave my hair oily/greasy. Lastly, this routine helps my hair stay moisturised for a longer time. I get healthy hair that smells nice with this regimen.

Disadvantages of My Deep/Leave in Conditioner Regimen

Sadly, with this regimen I have to be wary because a lot of the store bought products contain chemicals that may be harmful to my hair, health or even the environment. Also, the pleasant smell of the products may be too strong for some people and some may even be allergic to it. Let’s not also forget how expensive some of these products can be and how much hole they leave in our pockets. Surprisingly, I do not get as much curl definition as I did with my exclusive sheabutter regimen and in addition to that, my hair takes forever to dry for a braidout or twistout.

Generally, you have to consider factors like your budget, how much hair time you have, allergies, health status, hairstyle preference among others to decide which regimen will suit you best. From the advantages and disadvantages mentioned above, are you team store bought hair products or team homemade hair products? Lemme know in the comments.πŸ‘‡
